Ciudad Rodrigo evolved from an ancient fortress guarding the road from Salamanca to Portugal. Now, it provides comfortable respite for travellers on the same route. The town is a delightful size to explore on foot, cafes and bars surround the main plaza and it’s still possible to have a drink and tapa for under a euro! The history of the town is characterised by the stories surrounding the siege in 1812 prior to Wellington taking the fortress from the French, with plenty of ‘siege damage’ to see!
The ancient castle is now the Parador. The interior areas are beautifully restored, the bedrooms comfortable (many with balconies) and the staff attentive and welcoming. As a break in a road trip to Portugal, it’s just about perfect.
